Korean Cold Noodles (Naengmyeon) in Shinsaibashi and Namba
Where to eat them, and where to go after
For naengmyeon in Shinsaibashi: “楽韓堂 心斎橋店”, on the same block of Higashi-Shinsaibashi 2-8 as our bars (open late, about one minute’s walk); “ヨプの王豚塩焼 心斎橋店” in Soemoncho, where you can go from Korean barbecue to a bowl of cold noodles (closes around 5:00, about four minutes); and “冷麺館 心斎橋|韓国料理・冷麺・サムギョプサル・テールスープ” in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 1, which has cold noodles in its name (22:00–22:30, about five minutes). In Namba: “コギソウル 難波” (23:00) and “楽韓堂 ウラなんば店” in Ura-Namba (0:00). All five are restaurants where naengmyeon could be confirmed on Google Maps. Afterwards, the Korean bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi stay open until 5am.
Hello. I am Korean and I run three Korean bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi (HEAVEN, 韓国バーMOON and SARANG). To be clear from the start: all three are bars and we do not serve food, cold noodles included. But every night guests tell us what they just ate, and this page is built from those conversations plus the facts we checked restaurant by restaurant on Google Maps in September 2026. For every other dish, see the Korean food guide for Osaka; for grilled pork, samgyeopsal; for a chicken hot pot, dakhanmari; for a spicy shared pan, nakgopsae.
What naengmyeon is — and the two kinds you choose between
냉면 (naengmyeon) simply means “cold noodles”. When you order in a Korean restaurant, the first decision is which of the two kinds you want.
- 물냉면 (mul-naengmyeon, “water” cold noodles): the noodles sit in an ice-cold broth made from beef stock or the liquid of dongchimi (radish water kimchi). Clean, tangy and not spicy.
- 비빔냉면 (bibim-naengmyeon, “mixed” cold noodles): no broth; the noodles are tossed in a sweet and spicy chilli sauce. For people who like heat.
If in doubt: mul-naengmyeon if you do not like spicy food or you are finishing a barbecue, bibim-naengmyeon if you want something with punch. You will rarely go wrong.
Pyongyang style and Hamhung style
Koreans also argue about regional styles. Pyongyang naengmyeon uses noodles with a lot of buckwheat: they snap easily, it is mostly served as mul-naengmyeon, and the broth is very subtle. Hamhung naengmyeon uses thin starch noodles that are very chewy and hard to bite through, and it is mostly bibim-naengmyeon. Restaurants in Japan lean one way or the other, so if you care, ask when you order whether the noodles contain buckwheat.
Naengmyeon was originally a winter dish
It surprises people, but cold noodles were originally eaten in winter. A 19th-century Korean almanac of seasonal customs lists naengmyeon as a winter food and names Pyongyang’s as the best: noodles in icy dongchimi broth, eaten in a heated room. So ordering cold noodles in autumn or winter is not odd at all to a Korean.
How to eat it — cut the noodles, then add vinegar and mustard yourself
1. Cut the noodles with scissors
Korean cold noodles are very long and springy, so it is normal to cut them twice in a cross with scissors when the bowl arrives. Staff may ask whether you want them cut. In Korean: “잘라 주세요” (jalla juseyo, “please cut them”). If you prefer them long, leaving them uncut is fine.
2. Taste first, then add vinegar and mustard
There will be vinegar and mustard (겨자, gyeoja) on the table, and finishing the flavour yourself is part of the dish. Do not add them straight away: sip the broth first so you know how the restaurant made it. Vinegar makes it fresher; mustard gives a sharp heat that goes up your nose. Some people add neither. There is no wrong answer.
3. Cold noodles to finish a Korean barbecue
In Korea it is standard to order cold noodles after grilling meat, to finish the meal (Koreans even call it 후식냉면, “dessert naengmyeon”). After fatty pork, a bowl of cold, slightly sour mul-naengmyeon resets your mouth. The tables below show which restaurants serve both samgyeopsal and naengmyeon; for choosing a barbecue restaurant, see our samgyeopsal page.
4. Easy to order on your own
Cold noodles come one bowl per person, so unlike the hot pots they are easy to order alone. Useful phrases for the evening are in our etiquette guide.

These are only the places where naengmyeon could be confirmed from the Google Maps name, reviews or a search for Korean cold noodles. The order is distance from 韓国バーMOON (2-8-6 Higashi-Shinsaibashi), not a ranking by taste.

“楽韓堂 心斎橋店” is on the same block of Higashi-Shinsaibashi 2-8 as 韓国バーMOON and SARANG, about one minute (30 metres) on foot. Its closing time varies between about 3:00 and 5:00 depending on the source, so we only say “late”. It also serves nakgopsae (nakgopsae page).
“ヨプの王豚塩焼 心斎橋店” is in Soemoncho, about four minutes (260 metres) from our bars. It is mainly a pork barbecue restaurant; its reviews mention mul-naengmyeon, and it closes around 5:00. This is the place to do barbecue followed by cold noodles, the Korean way, even late at night.
“冷麺館 心斎橋|韓国料理・冷麺・サムギョプサル・テールスープ” is in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 1, about five minutes (400 metres) on foot, with cold noodles and samgyeopsal in its name. It opens for lunch and dinner separately, and the evening session ends around 22:00–22:30 (it varies by day). It closes earliest of the three, so check before going late.
Naengmyeon in Namba (nearest to 韓国バーMOON first)
In Namba there is one in Namba 3 and one in Ura-Namba (Nipponbashi 2). To Higashi-Shinsaibashi you cross Dotonbori and walk north: about 11 to 14 minutes.
| Name (as on Google Maps) | Area | Confirmed dishes | Closes around | Walk to 韓国バーMOON | Google rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| コギソウル 難波 | Namba 3 | samgyeopsal, naengmyeon | 23:00 | ~11 min | 4.7 (3,972 reviews) |
| 楽韓堂 ウラなんば店 | Nipponbashi 2 (Ura-Namba) | naengmyeon | 0:00 | ~14 min | 4.5 (475 reviews) |
“コギソウル 難波” is in Namba 3, closes around 23:00 and is about 11 minutes (800 metres) from our bars. With a Google rating of 4.7 from 3,972 reviews (September 2026), it has by far the most reviews of the five. Samgyeopsal is confirmed too, so you can do barbecue through to cold noodles in one place.
“楽韓堂 ウラなんば店” is in Ura-Namba (Nipponbashi 2), closes around 0:00 and is about 14 minutes (1.0 km) on foot, with a Google rating of 4.5 from 475 reviews (September 2026). Good for a night when you eat in Namba and want to stay out a bit later. The walk north is described in Dotonbori to the Korean bars.
The closing times were checked on a Sunday. Some restaurants close at different times on other days, and hours change, so check each restaurant’s Google Maps listing before you go.
After dinner: cold noodles finish the meal, not the night
In Korea a night does not end at the restaurant (1-cha). You move somewhere else for drinks (2-cha) and then to sing (3-cha). Cold noodles close a barbecue, but they do not close the evening: plenty of people go for one more drink once their mouth feels fresh again.
Our three bars are in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 2-chome: about one minute from “楽韓堂 心斎橋店” and four minutes from “ヨプの王豚塩焼 心斎橋店”. All three are bars, not Korean restaurants, and we do not serve food. Eat first, then come over.
| After the cold noodles | Second stop | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Still full of energy and want to sing | HEAVEN | Free karaoke and darts, so rounds two and three happen in one place |
| Want to sit down and talk for a long time | 韓国バーMOON | Lounge seats and a shisha, for a long conversation after dinner |
| Want a quiet drink, or you are on your own | SARANG | A quiet bar, fully non-smoking, with no karaoke; mostly counter seats, so coming alone is normal |
All three are open 21:00–05:00 every day, no reservation needed, within five minutes’ walk of each other. On Google, HEAVEN has 2,844 reviews, MOON (listed as 韓国バーMOON) 380 and SARANG 678, all rated 4.9 (September 2026). Staff are Korean and speak Japanese; simple English and translation apps work fine.
