Jjigae and Sundubu in Osaka
Shinsaibashi, Namba and where to go after

In Shinsaibashi, stews are confirmed at “韓国ダイニング 心斎橋ダンミテラス” in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 1 (closes around 0:00) and “小さな韓国あぷろ-心斎橋難波店” (23:00). In Namba: the sundubu specialist “和韓料理 スンドゥブ専門店 じゅろくなんば別邸 なんばウォーク店” in Namba Walk (22:00), “韓国料理 ハラペコ食堂 大阪 GEMSなんば店” in GEMS Namba (23:30) and “韓国肉料理・石鍋 イニョン 道頓堀店” in Dotonbori (23:00). Every restaurant here is one whose jjigae or sundubu we could confirm on Google Maps. Afterwards, the bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi are a few minutes’ walk away and stay open until 5am.

Hello. I am Korean and I run three Korean bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi (HEAVEN, 韓国バーMOON and SARANG). To be clear from the start: all three are bars and we do not serve food, stews included. But every night guests tell us what they just ate, and this page is built from those conversations plus the facts we checked restaurant by restaurant on Google Maps on 21 September 2026. For every other dish, see the Korean food guide for Osaka; for grilled pork, the samgyeopsal page.

What jjigae is — a dish to eat with rice, not a soup

찌개 (jjigae) is the most everyday cooked dish on a Korean table. It is usually translated as “Korean soup”, but to a Korean jjigae is not something you drink; it is what you eat your rice with. That is why there is little liquid and the seasoning is strong: you are meant to spoon it over rice, or tip the rice into the pot.

Two neighbours are worth knowing. 국 (guk) is a proper soup, served in your own bowl and drunk as it is. 전골 (jeongol) is a hotpot simmered at the table for a group. Jjigae sits between them and is often shared from one pot. In Japan, though, most Korean restaurants serve it in a single-person earthenware pot (뚝배기, ttukbaegi), which makes it easy to order on your own.

The four worth recognising on a menu

김치찌개 (kimchi jjigae) simmers well-aged, sour kimchi with pork or tuna. It is the stew Korean households make most often. 순두부찌개 (sundubu jjigae) uses soft, uncurdled tofu, usually with a raw egg cracked in at the end, so it is gentler in the mouth than its colour suggests. 된장찌개 (doenjang jjigae) is built on Korean soybean paste and is not spicy at all — the safe order if chilli is a problem. 부대찌개 (budae jjigae) simmers sausage, ham and instant noodles together; 부대 means “army”, and the dish was born around the US bases after the Korean War. It suits two or three people.

If you cannot decide
You like heat and want rice to go with it → kimchi jjigae. You want heat but something soft, or you are eating alone → sundubu jjigae. You do not want chilli → doenjang jjigae. You are a group and want noodles too → budae jjigae.

How to order: spice, numbers and what to do with the rice

1. You can usually ask for less spice

Sundubu is often offered in spice levels. In Korean: “안 맵게 해주세요” (not spicy, please) or “조금만 맵게” (only a little spicy). In Japanese, “辛くしないでください”. But where the chilli is the base of the dish — kimchi jjigae, budae jjigae — it often cannot be dialled down, so on a day when you cannot take heat, order doenjang jjigae from the start.

2. One person is completely normal

Samgyeopsal is generally sold from two portions upward. Stews are not: almost every restaurant will serve one person. In Korean, “순두부찌개 하나 주세요” (one sundubu jjigae, please). More phrases for the evening are in our etiquette guide.

3. The rice

Koreans do both: some tip the rice into the pot, some spoon the stew onto the rice. Neither is wrong. Adding the rice at the end turns what is left into something close to a porridge and keeps it hot to the last spoonful. The small dishes on the table (반찬, banchan) are usually refillable — alternating between kimchi, namul and the stew keeps the meal from flattening out.

4. It does not leave you smelling of smoke

Unlike grilling at the table, a stew produces no smoke, so it does not settle in your clothes or hair. If you are meeting someone afterwards, or want to sit and talk somewhere for a while, jjigae is the easier choice.

Shinsaibashi: restaurants serving jjigae and sundubu (nearest to 韓国バーMOON first)

These are only the places where jjigae or sundubu could be confirmed from the Google Maps name, popular-dish listing or description. The order is distance from 韓国バーMOON (2-8-6 Higashi-Shinsaibashi), not a ranking by taste. “—” means the walk was not measured.

小さな韓国あぷろ-心斎橋難波店Higashi-Shinsaibashi 1jjigae / sundubu, samgyeopsal23:00—4.5 (482 reviews)

“韓国ダイニング 心斎橋ダンミテラス” is on the fifth floor of a building in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 1, with sundubu jjigae among its popular dishes on Google Maps. It closes around 0:00, the latest of the Shinsaibashi stew restaurants, and samgyeopsal can be ordered alongside. “小さな韓国あぷろ-心斎橋難波店” is also in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 1 with sundubu jjigae confirmed, closing around 23:00. Both are a few minutes’ walk from our bars.

Looking for a stew after midnight is not realistic. At that hour the Korean food still open is the grill: the late-closing places run to 3:00–5:00 (they are listed on the samgyeopsal page).

Namba: restaurants serving jjigae and sundubu (nearest to 韓国バーMOON first)

In Namba they are spread across Namba Walk, Namba 3-chome and Dotonbori. It is about 10 to 12 minutes on foot to Higashi-Shinsaibashi, crossing Dotonbori and heading north.

“和韓料理 スンドゥブ専門店 じゅろくなんば別邸 なんばウォーク店” is, as the name says, a sundubu specialist, in the Namba Walk underground arcade. It keeps the arcade’s hours and closes at 22:00, so it suits an early dinner. “韓国料理 ハラペコ食堂 大阪 GEMSなんば店” is on the fifth floor of GEMS Namba, with noodles, jjigae and soups in its Google Maps description; at 23:30 it is the latest of these five. “韓国肉料理・石鍋 イニョン 道頓堀店” is below street level in Dotonbori 2-chome and centres on stone-pot dishes.

The walk north from Namba is described in Dotonbori to the Korean bars.

After dinner: somewhere you can sit down

In Korea a night does not end at the restaurant (1-cha). You move somewhere else for drinks (2-cha) and then to sing (3-cha). A stew is filling in a way grilled meat is not, so what works afterwards is somewhere you can sit and talk rather than keep moving.

Our three bars are in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 2-chome, a 3 to 5 minute walk from the Shinsaibashi restaurants above. All three are bars, not Korean restaurants, and we do not serve food. Eat first, then come over.

Sample evenings

Everything inside Shinsaibashi (a 5-minute walk)
20:00 kimchi jjigae and samgyeopsal at “韓国ダイニング 心斎橋ダンミテラス” → 22:00 about five minutes on foot to Higashi-Shinsaibashi → a shisha at 韓国バーMOON. First round and second both happen inside a 400-metre radius.

An early dinner in Namba
19:00 sundubu jjigae at “和韓料理 スンドゥブ専門店 じゅろくなんば別邸 なんばウォーク店” (Namba Walk, until 22:00) → 21:00 a 10-minute walk → 韓国バーMOON. Underground arcades close early, so starting dinner early leaves the evening long.

On your own
21:00 sundubu jjigae alone at “小さな韓国あぷろ-心斎橋難波店” (until 23:00) → 22:30 a quiet drink at the counter of SARANG. It is fully non-smoking, so the evening stays clear of smoke. See also drinking alone in Osaka.

FAQ

Q. Where can I eat sundubu in Shinsaibashi?

We do not rank by taste, but the two Shinsaibashi restaurants where stews are confirmed are “韓国ダイニング 心斎橋ダンミテラス” and “小さな韓国あぷろ-心斎橋難波店”. On Google the first is rated 4.8 (691 reviews) and the second 4.5 (482), both as of September 2026. They close around 0:00 and 23:00, so the later of the two is the first one.

Q. And in Namba?

“和韓料理 スンドゥブ専門店 じゅろくなんば別邸 なんばウォーク店”, a sundubu specialist in Namba Walk, closes around 22:00. Later than that, “韓国料理 ハラペコ食堂 大阪 GEMSなんば店” on the fifth floor of GEMS Namba runs to 23:30 and “韓国肉料理・石鍋 イニョン 道頓堀店” in Dotonbori to 23:00. Higashi-Shinsaibashi is about 10 to 12 minutes on foot.

Q. What is the difference between jjigae, sundubu and budae jjigae?

Sundubu jjigae (순두부찌개) uses soft, uncurdled tofu and usually has an egg cracked in, so it is gentle in the mouth. Budae jjigae (부대찌개) simmers sausage, ham and instant noodles and suits two or three people. Kimchi jjigae (김치찌개) is aged kimchi with pork. If you want something without chilli, doenjang jjigae (된장찌개) is made with soybean paste.

Q. Can I order a stew on my own?

Yes. In Japan most Korean restaurants serve stews in a single-person earthenware pot (뚝배기), so the “from two portions” rule that applies to samgyeopsal does not apply here. Afterwards, a counter bar where solo guests are normal is the natural next step — see drinking alone in Osaka.

Q. Can I ask for it to be less spicy?

Usually with sundubu, which is often offered in levels: “안 맵게 해주세요” (not spicy, please). Kimchi jjigae and budae jjigae are built on chilli and are harder to adjust, so on a day when heat is a problem, doenjang jjigae (된장찌개) is the reliable order.

Q. Can I eat a stew late at night?

These five close between 22:00 and 0:00, so after midnight it becomes difficult. Late-night Korean food in this area means the grill, where closing times run to 3:00–5:00 (see the samgyeopsal page). What is open later is covered in Osaka late-night bars. Hours change, so check Google Maps before you go.

Q. Where do people go for a drink afterwards?

The three Korean bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi are 3 to 5 minutes on foot from the Shinsaibashi restaurants. 韓国バーMOON for a shisha and conversation, SARANG for a quiet non-smoking counter, HEAVEN for free karaoke. Open 21:00–05:00 daily, no reservation needed.

Q. Will my clothes smell?

Far less than after a barbecue. A stew produces no smoke at the table, which is why it suits an evening where you are meeting people afterwards or plan to sit and talk for a while.

Q. Can I eat jjigae at HEAVEN, MOON or SARANG?

No. All three are bars, not Korean restaurants, and no food is served. Come for a drink after eating nearby. Guests must be 20 or older.

Restaurant details are as displayed on Google Maps on 21 September 2026: ratings, review counts, approximate closing times and walking times (Google Maps walking route, destination 韓国バーMOON, 2-8-6 Higashi-Shinsaibashi). Hours and menus change, so check each restaurant’s Google Maps listing before visiting. We have no commercial relationship with any restaurant listed here.
