Korean Whole Chicken Hot Pot (Dakhanmari) in Osaka
Where to eat it, and where to go after

For dakhanmari in Shinsaibashi, the place is “韓国酒場 タッカンマリ大学心斎橋校” in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 1 (closes around 23:30, about five minutes’ walk from our bars). A little further out there is “ペンガ タッカンマリ” in Tanimachi 9-chome (22:30, about 18 minutes on foot) and “タッカンマリ専門店てって 〜完全無添加〜” in Tsuruhashi (23:00, by train). Dakhanmari is genuinely hard to find in Osaka: these three are the only restaurants we could confirm on Google Maps. Afterwards, the Korean bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi stay open until 5am.

Hello. I am Korean and I run three Korean bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi (HEAVEN, 韓国バーMOON and SARANG). To be clear from the start: all three are bars and we do not serve food, dakhanmari included. But every night guests tell us what they just ate, and this page is built from those conversations plus the facts we checked restaurant by restaurant on Google Maps in September 2026. For every other dish, see the Korean food guide for Osaka; for grilled pork, samgyeopsal; for a spicy shared pan, nakgopsae; for stews you can order on your own, jjigae and sundubu.

What dakhanmari is — the name means “one whole chicken”

닭한마리 (dakhanmari) is 닭 (dak, chicken) + 한 (han, one) + 마리 (mari, the counter for animals): literally “one chicken”. It is less a recipe name than an order that became the name of the dish. A whole chicken is simmered in a clear broth with leeks and potatoes in a big pot in the middle of the table. It grew up around Dongdaemun in Seoul from the 1960s onward, and there is still a whole alley of dakhanmari restaurants there.

Many of those places started out serving chicken kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), which is why the meal still ends with noodles cooked in the leftover broth. In Seoul it is a local, everyday dish rather than a tourist one — and that is also why so few restaurants in Japan serve it. Korean restaurants in Osaka are built around barbecue, stews and fried chicken.

How it differs from samgyetang

If you know one Korean chicken dish, it is probably samgyetang. They are quite different. Samgyetang is one small chicken per person, stuffed with glutinous rice and served as a restorative soup that you finish yourself. Dakhanmari is one big pot shared by the table: you cut the chicken, dip it in sauce, and save the broth for the noodles.

On your own, and you want something nourishing → samgyetang.
Two or more, and you want to sit around a pot of chicken → dakhanmari.
You want something hot and spicy to share → nakgopsae (this page).
On your own, with rice → jjigae or sundubu (this page).

It also helps to know that dakhanmari is not spicy. The heat lives in the dipping sauce, which you mix yourself, so it is the Korean dish people choose when someone at the table does not eat chilli.

How to eat it — you start by making the sauce

1. Mix your own dipping sauce

The most distinctive part of dakhanmari is that you make the sauce. The table has soy sauce, vinegar, dadaegi (a chilli paste) and mustard, and you combine them in a small dish. A good starting point is roughly half a spoon of dadaegi to one each of mustard, soy sauce and vinegar. The vinegar cuts through the chicken fat and the mustard goes straight up your nose — that combination is the taste of Dongdaemun. Less dadaegi if you do not like heat, more vinegar if you want it lighter.

2. Eat the chicken first, keep the broth

Once the chicken is cooked, it is cut up at the table with scissors and you dip the pieces in your sauce. The trick is not to drink all the broth: by now it carries all the flavour of the chicken, and you need it for what comes next.

3. Finish with kalguksu

When the chicken is gone, kalguksu (Korean knife-cut noodles) go into the broth. Some restaurants also offer rice cakes or dumplings to add. The noodles are part of the dish, not an extra, so leave room for them. Stirring a little of your dipping sauce into the broth at this point changes the flavour in a good way.

4. Treat it as a dish for two or more

One whole chicken is a lot for one person, so dakhanmari is basically for two or more. Eating alone, a stew in a single-person pot is the safer choice (jjigae and sundubu). Useful phrases for the evening are in our etiquette guide.

5. Allow time for the pot to cook

A whole chicken takes a while, so you will not be eating the moment you sit down. Arriving shortly before closing is a bad idea; an 8pm start lets you get all the way to the noodles without rushing.

Restaurants in Osaka serving dakhanmari (nearest to 韓国バーMOON first)

These are only the places where dakhanmari could be confirmed from the Google Maps name, description or popular-dish listing. The order is distance from 韓国バーMOON (2-8-6 Higashi-Shinsaibashi), not a ranking by taste. “—” means not a walking distance (Tsuruhashi is a train ride).

The only one you can walk to in Shinsaibashi is “韓国酒場 タッカンマリ大学心斎橋校”, at 1-12 Higashi-Shinsaibashi, about 5 minutes (roughly 350 metres) by Google Maps walking route from our bars. It closes around 23:30. As the name suggests, it is a Korean pub built around dakhanmari, with a Google rating of 4.0 from 64 reviews (September 2026).

“ペンガ タッカンマリ” is in Ikutamacho, near Tanimachi 9-chome, about 18 minutes (1.3 km) on foot. The walk goes east and uphill, so the subway (Shinsaibashi to Tanimachi 9-chome) is easier. It closes around 22:30, the earliest of the three.

“タッカンマリ専門店てって 〜完全無添加〜” is a specialist in Tsuruhashi (Higashi-Obase 3, Higashinari-ku), closing around 23:00. From Tsuruhashi to Minami you will take the train (Kintetsu or the Sennichimae subway line); journey times depend on the timetable, so check the route on Google Maps before you set off. How Tsuruhashi and Shinsaibashi fit together is on our Tsuruhashi Korea Town page.

The closing times were checked on a Sunday. Some restaurants close at different times on other days, and hours change, so check each restaurant’s Google Maps listing before you go.

Korean food late at night: a Korean pub open until morning

All three restaurants above close between 22:30 and 23:30, and a whole chicken is not a dish for a late start anyway. If what you actually want is late-night Korean food, a Korean pub that stays open until morning is more realistic.

韓国料理 Izakaya tag(居酒屋タグ) 難波店Nishi-Shinsaibashi 2late night6:00~7 min4.7 (624 reviews)

“韓国料理 Izakaya tag(居酒屋タグ) 難波店” in Nishi-Shinsaibashi 2 closes around 6:00 according to Google Maps, about 7 minutes (450 metres) from our bars. We could not confirm whether it serves dakhanmari, so we list it only as a Korean pub that is open late. Check Google Maps for what is on the menu before you go.

After dinner: a second stop where you can keep talking

In Korea a night does not end at the restaurant (1-cha). You move somewhere else for drinks (2-cha) and then to sing (3-cha). With dakhanmari the reason to move is simple: the restaurants close around 23:30. Wait for the chicken, eat it, finish the noodles, and that is usually about the time.

Our three bars are in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 2-chome, about 5 minutes on foot from “韓国酒場 タッカンマリ大学心斎橋校”. All three are bars, not Korean restaurants, and we do not serve food. Eat first, then come over.

Sample evenings — allow time for the pot

All in Shinsaibashi (a five-minute walk)
20:00 dakhanmari at “韓国酒場 タッカンマリ大学心斎橋校”, finishing with kalguksu → 22:30 about five minutes on foot → a shisha at 韓国バーMOON. Starting around 8pm gives the chicken time to cook and you time to reach the noodles.

From the Tsuruhashi specialist to Shinsaibashi
19:00 dakhanmari at “タッカンマリ専門店てって 〜完全無添加〜” in Tsuruhashi (until 23:00) → 21:30 train to Minami → karaoke at HEAVEN. Tsuruhashi means a train ride, so check the route before you leave.

Starting late
24:00 something light at “韓国料理 Izakaya tag(居酒屋タグ) 難波店” (until 6:00) → 2:00 about seven minutes on foot → 韓国バーMOON or HEAVEN. The three dakhanmari restaurants have closed by 23:30, so this is the plan for a late start.

FAQ

Q. What is dakhanmari?

Korean for “one whole chicken”. A whole chicken is simmered in a clear broth with leeks and potatoes, and the pieces are dipped in a sauce you mix from soy sauce, vinegar, dadaegi and mustard. It comes from the Dongdaemun area of Seoul, from the 1960s onward, and ends with kalguksu noodles cooked in the leftover broth.

Q. Where can I eat dakhanmari in Osaka?

We do not rank by taste, but three restaurants have dakhanmari confirmed on Google Maps: “韓国酒場 タッカンマリ大学心斎橋校” (Higashi-Shinsaibashi 1), “ペンガ タッカンマリ” (Ikutamacho) and “タッカンマリ専門店てって 〜完全無添加〜” (Tsuruhashi). Their Google ratings are 4.0 (64 reviews), 4.4 (134) and 4.6 (89) respectively, as of September 2026.

Q. Is there dakhanmari in Shinsaibashi?

Yes: “韓国酒場 タッカンマリ大学心斎橋校” in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 1, about 5 minutes (350 metres) by Google Maps walking route from our bars at 2-8-6 Higashi-Shinsaibashi. It closes around 23:30. Hours change, so check Google Maps before you go.

Q. What is the difference between dakhanmari and samgyetang?

Samgyetang is one small stuffed chicken per person, served as a soup you finish yourself. Dakhanmari is one big pot shared by the table; you dip the chicken in sauce and keep the broth for the kalguksu. Samgyetang works for one person, dakhanmari is for two or more.

Q. Is dakhanmari spicy?

The broth is not. You control the heat through the dipping sauce, and with less dadaegi it is not spicy at all, which makes it a good choice when someone at the table does not eat chilli. For a spicy pot, see nakgopsae.

Q. Can I eat dakhanmari on my own?

It uses a whole chicken, so it is really a dish for two or more. On your own, a stew in a single-person pot is safer — see jjigae and sundubu. For bars where turning up alone is normal, see drinking alone in Osaka.

Q. Can I eat dakhanmari late at night?

Not really. The three restaurants close between 22:30 and 23:30, and the chicken takes time to cook. For late-night Korean food, a Korean pub such as “韓国料理 Izakaya tag(居酒屋タグ) 難波店” (Nishi-Shinsaibashi 2, closing around 6:00, about 7 minutes from our bars) is more realistic, although we could not confirm that it serves dakhanmari.

Q. Is there a quiet bar for a drink after dakhanmari?

Yes: SARANG, in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 2-chome, about 5 minutes on foot from “韓国酒場 タッカンマリ大学心斎橋校”. It is a quiet, fully non-smoking bar with no karaoke and mostly counter seats, so coming on your own is completely normal. Open 21:00–05:00 daily, no reservation needed.

Q. Where do people go for a drink after dakhanmari?

The three Korean bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi are about 5 minutes on foot from “韓国酒場 タッカンマリ大学心斎橋校”. HEAVEN to sing (free karaoke and darts), 韓国バーMOON to sit and talk over a shisha, SARANG for a quiet, non-smoking drink, including on your own. Open 21:00–05:00 daily, so you can still get in after a late finish.

Q. Can I eat dakhanmari at HEAVEN, MOON or SARANG?

No. All three are bars, not Korean restaurants, and no food is served. Come for a drink after eating nearby. Guests must be 20 or older.
