Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Osaka:
Lights, Bars to 5am
What is there to do in Osaka on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve? Walk under the Midosuji Illumination, which stays lit until 31 December from around 17:00 to 25:00, eat dinner somewhere in Minami, then sit down for a long drink in Higashi-Shinsaibashi. Dress for cold: by the Japan Meteorological Agency’s normals the daily low for the last ten days of December is 4.3°C, so a night that runs past midnight is a night for a coat, a scarf and gloves. Our three Korean bars, HEAVEN, 韓国バーMOON and SARANG, open every day of the year, 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January included, from 21:00 to 05:00, and are within a short walk of one another in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 2-chome.
I am a Korean who runs those three bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi, Osaka. This page puts the official dates and figures for the end of 2026 in one place, from Osaka City’s announcement of 24 September 2026 and the sources listed at the bottom, all checked on 26 October 2026, and then explains where our bars fit into those nights.
The 2026 calendar: Christmas on a Friday, New Year’s Day on a Friday too
Christmas Eve, 24 December 2026, is a Thursday, and Christmas Day, 25 December, is a Friday. The weekend that follows is Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 December, and Monday 28 December opens the final week of the year. New Year’s Eve, 31 December, falls on a Thursday, so 1 January 2027 is a Friday, with Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 January after it.
Two points for anyone arriving from a country where the dates work differently. The Cabinet Office’s list of national holidays has no holiday at all in December, in 2026 or in 2027, so 25 December is not a public holiday in Japan. 1 January is Ganjitsu, New Year’s Day, a national holiday whose stated purpose is to celebrate the beginning of the year. I am stating only what the holiday list says; how any given workplace, shop or family treats those days is outside what this page can confirm.
Osaka’s year-end lights: what is lit on 24, 25 and 31 December
The winter lights in Osaka run under one name, Osaka Hikari no Kyoen 2026, for 90 days from Tuesday 3 November 2026, a public holiday, to Sunday 31 January 2027. The parts that matter for Christmas and New Year’s Eve are in the table, with the dates and hours as Osaka City announced them on 24 September 2026 (the overall period was announced on 26 May 2026).
| Programme | Dates | Hours | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midosuji Illumination 2026 (the core programme) | Tue 3 November to Thu 31 December 2026, 59 days | Around 17:00 to 25:00 (1:00 the next morning) | About 4 km of Midosuji in five areas, from the Hanshin-mae crossing in Kita ward to the Namba-Nishiguchi crossing in Chuo ward |
| Illuminated façade of Osaka City Hall (OSAKA Hikari no Renaissance 2026) | 3 November to 31 December | 17:00 to 25:00 | In front of Osaka City Hall |
| Nakanoshima Illumination Street (Miotsukushi Promenade) | 3 November to 31 December | 17:00 to 25:00 | Nakanoshima, around Osaka City Hall and Nakanoshima Park |
| Projection mapping on the Osaka Central Public Hall | Fri 11 December to Fri 25 December | 17:30 to 21:30 | Nakanoshima |
| Hikari no Marché | 11 December to 25 December | 16:00 to 22:00 | Around Naniwabashi Station |
| Osaka Hikari no Kyoen 2026 as a whole | Tue 3 November 2026 to Sun 31 January 2027, 90 days | Varies by programme | Across the city; from 1 January 2027 only some of the area programmes continue |
Read against the calendar, that gives three plain facts. On Thursday 24 and Friday 25 December every line in the table is running, and 25 December is the final day for the projection mapping and the Hikari no Marché. On New Year’s Eve, 31 December, the Midosuji Illumination, the City Hall façade and the Nakanoshima street are all on their last day, and the Midosuji lights stay on until 25:00, which is the first hour of 1 January 2027. From 1 January only some area programmes remain. The southern end of the Midosuji section, the Namba-Nishiguchi crossing, is in Minami, which is why a walk from the lights to Higashi-Shinsaibashi works on foot.
All of these dates and hours are as of Osaka City’s announcement of 24 September 2026 and can change, so look at the official latest guidance before you set out.
December nights in Osaka: temperature normals and what to wear
The figures below are the Japan Meteorological Agency’s normals for Osaka, averaged over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020, for the whole of December, for each ten-day period, and for January. A normal is a long-run average and says nothing about the weather of any single year, so for the actual conditions on your dates look at the agency’s forecast closer to the time.
| Period | Daily mean | Daily high | Daily low | Rainfall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December (whole month) | 8.7°C | 12.3°C | 5.3°C | 55.5 mm |
| Early December (1st–10th) | 10.1°C | 13.9°C | 6.7°C | 18.4 mm |
| Mid December (11th–20th) | 8.4°C | 11.9°C | 5.2°C | 16.9 mm |
| Late December (21st–31st) | 7.5°C | 11.1°C | 4.3°C | 20.3 mm |
| January (whole month) | 6.2°C | 9.7°C | 3.0°C | 47.0 mm |
So the stretch from Christmas to New Year’s Eve sits in the coldest ten days of the month: a daily low of 4.3°C, with the high reaching only 11.1°C. Once January begins the low drops again, to 3.0°C. The December normal for total snow depth in Osaka is 0 cm, and the month averages 152.1 hours of sunshine. Those two numbers describe the average, so they are a reason to pack for cold rather than a promise about any particular night.
Darkness comes early as well. By the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s figures for Osaka, the sun sets at 16:47 on 1 December, 16:51 on 21 December, 16:53 on both 24 and 25 December and 16:57 on 31 December, which means the lights along Midosuji come on at about the moment the sky goes dark. Sunrise on 24 December is 7:02, on 25 December 7:03 and on 31 December 7:05, so anyone leaving a bar at 05:00 walks out two hours before daylight.
| When you are outside | Normal to plan around | A rough guide to what to wear, built on the normals |
|---|---|---|
| Early evening, 17:00 to 19:00, under the lights | Between the daily high and the daily mean: around 11°C down to 7.5°C in late December | A winter coat over a knit; a scarf for the walk along Midosuji, since it is a long straight avenue |
| After midnight, walking between bars | Heading toward the late-December daily low of 4.3°C | The same coat with gloves and a scarf; layers you can take off indoors, because the bars are warmer than the street |
| 05:00, closing time, from 1 January onward | Close to the January daily low of 3.0°C | Everything you have: heavy coat, scarf, gloves, and something warm under it all |
These are suggestions drawn from averages, and people feel the cold differently; a wet or windy night will feel colder than the table. For how November leads into this, with its own tables and the dates the leaves turn, see our guide to Osaka nights in November.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Minami: lights, dinner, then a seat in Higashi-Shinsaibashi
Here is the shape of a Christmas night in Osaka as I would lay it out, built only from the dates and times above. The sun sets at 16:53 on both 24 and 25 December, and the Midosuji Illumination comes on at around 17:00, so the first stop is the avenue itself. From the Namba-Nishiguchi crossing at the southern end you can walk north along Midosuji toward Shinsaibashi under the lights, and the section stays lit until 25:00, so it also works as the last thing you see on the way back.
Dinner is yours to choose, anywhere in Minami that suits you. Our bars serve drinks and company rather than meals, so a Christmas dinner belongs at a restaurant first; what we add is the part after it, from 21:00 until 05:00. The walk from the Glico sign on Dotonbori to our three bars takes about 6 to 8 minutes, and both Shinsaibashi Station and Namba Station are within walking distance, so the move from the table to the counter happens on foot. Our access guide to Higashi-Shinsaibashi has the routes from each station.
Which of the three bars to choose depends on who you are with. Two people who want to sit and talk have the lounge seats at 韓国バーMOON. A group of friends who want to sing have the karaoke and darts at HEAVEN. Someone spending Christmas in Osaka alone has the counter at SARANG, which is quiet, fully non-smoking and has no karaoke. The details of each are in the section on our bars further down.
One date to note: 25 December is the final day of the projection mapping on the Central Public Hall and of the Hikari no Marché, both up in Nakanoshima, so anyone who wants those as part of a Christmas night sees them on 24 or 25 December at the latest, between 17:30 and 21:30 for the mapping and 16:00 to 22:00 for the marché. If you are weighing Minami against the other districts for the night, our guide to Osaka’s nightlife districts explains how each one differs.
New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day
Thursday 31 December is the final night of the Midosuji Illumination, the City Hall façade and the Nakanoshima street, all lit until 25:00, so the lights carry on into the first hour of 2027. Our three bars open at 21:00 on 31 December and close at 05:00 on 1 January, the same hours as every other night of the year, and on the evening of 1 January, a public holiday, they open again at 21:00. Midnight passes at the counter or in the lounge seats with the people you came with and with the Korean staff behind the bar.
Two practical points for the way home. Year-end and New Year timetables can differ from the ordinary ones, so check each company’s official site for the trains on your night before you go out; with the bars open until 05:00, waiting for the morning trains is one way around the question. And whoever has been drinking goes home without a car, a motorbike or a bicycle. A night when a great many people are out in the same streets has its own things to keep in mind, and our page on staying comfortable on a crowded night out covers them.
For a company, a club or a circle of friends closing the year together, whole-bar hire is available for up to 30 people at HEAVEN, up to 20 at SARANG and around 15 at 韓国バーMOON; send an Instagram DM to the bar you have in mind with the date, the time and the number of people, and the details can be settled there. How to choose between the three for a year-end party and its second round, with a checklist for the organiser, is in our guide to bonenkai and nijikai in Osaka. Before any year-end night in the district, our page on what to know before a night out in Minami is worth five minutes.
Our three Korean bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi keep the same hours on Christmas and New Year’s Eve
All three sit on upper floors of buildings in Higashi-Shinsaibashi 2-chome: HEAVEN on the fifth floor of the Galaxy Building No.3; 韓国バーMOON on the LUXE Building’s third floor; SARANG in room 206, second floor of the Gold Center Building. Walking between any two takes a few minutes, the Glico sign on Dotonbori is about 6 to 8 minutes away on foot, and Shinsaibashi Station and Namba Station are both within walking distance.
In each of them Korean staff stand behind the counter, K-pop is playing, and the shelf holds Korean drinks: soju, makgeolli and somaek. You can talk with the staff across the counter as you drink, a conversation with the next seat sometimes begins by itself, and the room is shared by Japanese guests who love Korea and Korean guests who love Japan, which makes walking in alone straightforward. Because our three bars do not serve food, eat your Christmas or New Year’s Eve dinner first and come to us for the drinks that follow. Doors open at 21:00 and close at 05:00 every day with no closing day, which is how 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January come to have the same hours as any other night, and walking in needs no reservation; a question beforehand is welcome by phone or Instagram DM. Both credit cards and cash work at all three. On Google Maps each bar is rated 4.9, and the review counts as of September 2026 stand at HEAVEN with 2,844, 韓国バーMOON with 380 and SARANG with 678.
| Bar | Choose it when | Inside |
|---|---|---|
| 韓国バーMOON | Two of you want to sit down and talk through a Christmas night | Shisha and lounge seats, karaoke available, smoking allowed indoors |
| HEAVEN | A group of friends wants to sing the year out | Karaoke and darts free to use, smoking allowed indoors |
| SARANG | You are closing the year alone, or as two who want calm | A quiet room, fully non-smoking, mostly counter seats, with no karaoke |
- Open 21:00 to 05:00 every day of the year, including 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January, with no reservation needed to walk in.
- Whole-bar hire is possible for up to 30 people at HEAVEN, up to 20 at SARANG and around 15 at 韓国バーMOON; ask by Instagram DM.
- Credit cards and cash are both fine.
- Smoking is allowed indoors at HEAVEN and 韓国バーMOON; SARANG is fully non-smoking throughout.
- Guests under 20 cannot enter. After drinking, leave the car, motorbike or bicycle where it is.
To settle on one of the three in a few taps, our picker by purpose lets you compare the three.

FAQ
Q. Until what time are the Osaka lights on over Christmas and New Year?
The Midosuji Illumination 2026 is lit from around 17:00 to 25:00 every night until Thursday 31 December, as are the illuminated façade of Osaka City Hall and the Nakanoshima Illumination Street. The projection mapping on the Central Public Hall (17:30 to 21:30) and the Hikari no Marché (16:00 to 22:00) end on 25 December. From 1 January 2027 only some area programmes of Osaka Hikari no Kyoen 2026 continue. Dates are as announced by Osaka City on 24 September 2026; check the official guidance before you go.
Q. How cold is an Osaka night in late December?
By the Japan Meteorological Agency’s 1991 to 2020 normals, the daily low for 21 to 31 December is 4.3°C and the daily high 11.1°C, against a December low of 5.3°C for the month as a whole and 3.0°C in January. A coat, scarf and gloves are the sensible answer for a night that goes past midnight. Normals are averages, so look at the forecast for your own dates.
Q. Is 25 December a public holiday in Japan?
No. The Cabinet Office list of national holidays contains no December holiday in 2026 or 2027, so 25 December 2026 is an ordinary Friday on the national calendar. 1 January is Ganjitsu, New Year’s Day, which is a national holiday.
Q. Are your bars open on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve?
Yes. HEAVEN, 韓国バーMOON and SARANG open every day of the year without a closing day, so on 24, 25 and 31 December and on 1 January the hours are the usual 21:00 to 05:00.
Q. Do we have to book for Christmas or New Year’s Eve?
Walking in needs no reservation on any night. For a group that wants a bar to itself, whole-bar hire is available for up to 30 people at HEAVEN, up to 20 at SARANG and around 15 at 韓国バーMOON; send an Instagram DM with the date, time and number of people.
Q. Which bar suits two people on Christmas night?
韓国バーMOON, with its lounge seats and shisha, is built for sitting down and talking at length. HEAVEN suits a group that wants karaoke, and SARANG suits a quiet drink, alone or as two, with no karaoke and a fully non-smoking room.
Q. Where is smoking allowed?
Indoors at HEAVEN and at 韓国バーMOON. SARANG is fully non-smoking throughout.
Q. How old do I have to be to come in on New Year’s Eve?
Twenty. Guests under 20 cannot enter. Our three places are bars with Korean staff and Korean drinks, and they do not serve food, so have dinner before you come.
