How to choose a shisha
flavor in Osaka
Hello. I am a Korean who runs three Korean bars in Higashi-Shinsaibashi, Osaka (HEAVEN, MOON and SARANG). One of them, MOON, is a Korean bar that also serves shisha. The question I hear most from behind the counter is simply “which flavor should I get?” When a menu lists fifty names, the names themselves tell you almost nothing. This guide exists to end that moment of paralysis. You do not need to memorize brands. Five families are enough to choose confidently on your first visit.
Why people end up disappointed
When a shisha is “not what I expected”, it is almost always one of two mistakes.
- Choosing by the name. A flavor labelled blueberry does not deliver juice. It delivers the memory of a smell. Expect food and you will be disappointed every time
- Not deciding how sweet you want it. Two flavors in the same family can be worlds apart. One lingers sweetly, one disappears cleanly. Skip this decision and you will be bored an hour in
Decide two things before you order: sweet or clean, and light or heavy. Say those four words to your staff and you will land close to right almost every time. The families below simply give you the vocabulary.
If shisha itself is new to you, the basics of how it is smoked and how long a session lasts are in our Osaka shisha and hookah guide.
The five flavor families
Every venue stocks different products, but the way flavors are grouped is close to universal. Use the words in this table anywhere and staff will understand you.
| Family | Typical names | How it smokes | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mint | Mint / spearmint / menthol | Light, cool on the throat | First-timers. Anyone who finds heavy smoke unpleasant. Summer, or straight after a meal |
| Fruit | Grape / peach / lemon / berry / mango | Light to medium, bright aroma | The safe default. Pairs easily with drinks and rarely divides a group |
| Dessert | Vanilla / caramel / chocolate / milk | Sweet and heavy, lingers | People with a sweet tooth. On its own it gets tiring, so it belongs in a mix |
| Tea & herbal | Earl Grey (bergamot) / jasmine / rose | Light but deep | You dislike sweet but also dislike bland. The best family for a long sitting |
| Spice | Cardamom / cinnamon / cola | Distinctive, very satisfying | Your third session, not your first. Strong character, not for a trial run |
Start with mint or fruit. Not because they are better, but because they stay drinkable even when you guess wrong. Dessert and spice rarely survive a full session on their own. They are supporting actors.
Bergamot is the quiet right answer
Bergamot is the citrus used to scent Earl Grey tea, and in shisha it occupies an unusual position: light to smoke, yet the aroma stays with you.
- Restrained sweetness with an aroma that keeps going, so an hour or two never turns monotonous
- Add a little mint and it reads like iced tea. Good in summer and good as a second venue
- Add a little peach or vanilla and it moves toward sweet tea instead

When a guest tells me “nothing sweet, but I do not want it boring either”, this is the first thing I reach for. If you truly cannot decide, bergamot is the closest thing to a correct answer.
Three mixes worth memorizing
Shisha is normally served as a blend of two or three flavors. You do not have to design it yourself. Order by the template.
Template 1 — your first bowl: fruit plus mint.
Grape or peach with a little mint. Easy to read, easy on the throat.
I do not recommend anything else for a first session. Add “not too sweet” and it will be adjusted.
Template 2 — the long night: tea base plus a little fruit.
Bergamot with a touch of lemon or peach. Never monotonous, never heavy,
so two hours taste the same as the first ten minutes. The right choice when conversation is the point.
Template 3 — the closer: dessert plus mint.
A small amount of vanilla or caramel, finished with mint. It replaces dessert.
Keep the dessert flavor in a supporting role or the weight will defeat you.
Our staff handle the setup at MOON, so “template two, not too sweet” is a perfectly good order. If the words escape you, “lighter than the last one” works just as well, and we can rebuild it mid-session.
What an ice hose actually does
“Ice shisha” gets searched a lot, and it confuses people because it is equipment, not a flavor. A chamber holding a frozen gel pack sits at the end of the hose, and the smoke cools as it passes through.
- Cooler smoke is gentler on the throat. If hot smoke has put you off before, this is the difference you were missing
- Even a fruit flavor with no mint feels cool. Useful when you want to keep a sweet aroma but smoke it cold
- The chill lasts roughly an hour, which is about the length of one bowl, so it makes sense to fit it from the start
Reference: an ice hose cools smoke by passing it through a frozen gel pack, with the chill lasting about one hour — checked 11 September 2026
It shines in hot weather and after spicy food. Plenty of our guests arrive straight from a Korean meal nearby, so this is one of the most common requests we get. If you are planning the second stop of the night, see bar etiquette in Osaka for how the evening usually flows.
Choosing by occasion
| Occasion | Family to pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A date | Tea base plus a little fruit | Elegant aroma that never competes with the conversation, and light enough to sit for hours |
| With friends | Fruit plus mint | Nobody hates it. Passing one hose around, everyone reaches the same verdict |
| Alone, winding down | Bergamot, alone or with mint | Quiet enough that it does not interrupt whatever you are thinking about |
| After dinner or a second venue | Mint, or add an ice hose | It resets your palate. The spicier the meal, the better it works |
| Winding down after a loud night | Dessert plus mint | A stand-in for dessert, and a gentle way to lower the temperature of the evening |

Pairing with Korean drinks — what a Korean bar can do
This rarely comes up at a dedicated shisha lounge, but MOON is a Korean bar, so Korean drinks sit alongside the hose.
- With soju, go mint or bergamot. The drink is clean, so keeping the smoke light stops the two fighting
- With makgeolli, go fruit. Its soft texture carries fruit aroma naturally. Peach and berry work well
- With fruit liqueurs, push the mint up. Both sides are sweet, so the cool note restores the balance
If you are not sure how those drinks differ, Soju 101 covers it. One bowl runs roughly 60 to 90 minutes, so there is no need to drink quickly. That length of time is the point of shisha, not a side effect of it.
Three bars, three purposes
All three sit within about 200m of each other in Higashi-Shinsaibashi. Shisha is served at MOON and HEAVEN; SARANG is entirely non-smoking.
MOON — the one for a slow shisha. Lounge seating you can sink into for a long session, and the rare combination of Korean drinks alongside a hose. 380 reviews, rated 4.9 (as of September 2026).
HEAVEN — the loud, playful one, with free karaoke and darts, and shisha too. It has a VIP room, so a group can pass the hose around in a space of their own, then move to MOON to slow down. 2,844 reviews, rated 4.9 (as of September 2026).
SARANG — the quiet one, built around the counter, entirely non-smoking and deliberately with no karaoke. Choose it when someone in your group would rather avoid smoke altogether. 678 reviews, rated 4.9 (as of September 2026).
HEAVEN
Free karaoke and darts. The one for larger groups and louder nights.

- Under-20s cannot enter, even if they do not intend to smoke. Under Japan's revised Health Promotion Act, venues designated for smoking are closed to anyone under 20, and you may be asked for ID
- One bowl runs about 60 to 90 minutes and is usually shared. It is not something to rush
- The smell stays in your clothes. If tomorrow matters, do not leave your jacket on the seat
- Do not push through a bad day. Smoking on an empty stomach can leave you light-headed. Order water alongside

Shinsaibashi is crowded with shisha venues, and there are more in Namba, Amerikamura and Soemoncho. The reason to choose MOON, if there is one, is narrow and specific: you can smoke while drinking Korean alcohol and talking to Korean staff. Directions are in getting to Higashi-Shinsaibashi.
Frequently asked questions
Q. It is my first time. What should I order?
Say “fruit with a little mint, not too sweet”. That is the hardest order to get wrong, and we can rebuild it if it feels heavy.
Q. What does bergamot taste like?
Like Earl Grey tea. The sweetness is restrained and the aroma is what lingers. It is the best fit for anyone who dislikes sweet but also dislikes bland.
Q. Can I ask for an ice hose?
Yes, just ask. The smoke comes through cold, which we particularly recommend in summer or after a heavy meal.
Q. Can I come alone?
Absolutely. Some guests take a bowl to themselves, others share. No reservation is needed.
Q. I do not smoke cigarettes. Is shisha still for me?
Most of our shisha guests are not smokers. Start with a light family, and stop if it does not agree with you.
Q. Do you speak English?
Our staff are Korean and speak Japanese fluently, and we handle English every night. Ordering a flavor is never the difficult part.
Q. What are your hours?
All three bars are open daily from 21:00 to 05:00, with no closing day. Guests often arrive after the last train, and that is when shisha is at its best.
